Report |
THE Wingmakers got their year off the
ground with victory over the in-form Steelmen.
Gareth Owen’s men banished memories of heavy defeats
to Bangor and NEWI Cefn Druids thanks to a first-half strike
from top-scorer Paul Hallows and a resilient second-half defensive
display.
Hallows slid in his eighth of the season in the 33rd-minute
after former Wrexham goalkeeper Kristian Rogers denied Danny
Desormeaux, who adjusted his feet to collect Phil Molyneux’s
pass and get a shot on target.
And Hallows, who along with Darren Wright had earlier gone
close, should have doubled his tally moments later only to
turn Gareth Caughter’s cross over.
Port, who had not lost in five, also had their opportunities
in a thoroughly entertaining opening period, with debutant
Aaron Tyrer saving well from Liam McCreesh, Chad Bond heading
on to the bar before right-back Ryan Edwards stopped a certain
goal.
Chances were at a premium after the break, but every time the
visitors threatened an equaliser, they were repelled by magnificent
centre-backs Mark Allen and John Davies.

THE Wingmakers continued
their improvement by holding the in-form
Seasider’s to a draw, but they should
have won it.
Gareth Owen’s men dominated the second
half with their best opportunity coming in
the final seconds when Paul Hallows burst
clear. But instead of passing to his strike-partner
James McIntosh who would have had a tap-in,
Hallows shot into the side netting.
Hallows was also involved in the game’s
major talking point shortly after half-time
when he headed in Ryan Edwards’ cross
only for the goal to be controversially ruled
out for offside.
The woodwork also denied Airbus late on when
Darren Wright’s 18-yard effort hit
the post.
Aber had most of the play in the first half,
but it was the visitors who had the best
chances with McIntosh, following a solo run,
and Danny Desormeaux going close. |

THE Wingmakers bounced back from heartbreak to end the table-topping Saints’ 12-match winning run.
Player-boss Gareth Owen said the cruel defeat to Llanelli seven days earlier would not shake his side’s new-found belief, and they were as good as his word as they became the first team to leave Park Hall with a point.
And they would have won it had Paul Harrison not been in such fine form, tipping a Paul Hallows header from a Rees Darlington cross on to the bar and denying Phil Molyneux one-on-one in the first half before saving from substitute James McIntosh late on in the second.
Chris Doran was rarely troubled at the other end thanks to his rock-solid defence, marshalled superbly by John Davies, and the fact the Saints had to play for 48 minutes with 10 men after Chris King was sent off just before the break for foul and abusive language.
But they also had lady luck on their side as only the woodwork prevented them from suffering another late loss as Alfie Carter’s header hit the bar in injury-time. |

THE Wingmakers produced
their best performance of the season to
end their seven-game winless run and avenge
a Premier Cup loss to boot.
Gareth Owen’s men dominated throughout
and they should have been ahead long before
James McIntosh broke the deadlock seven minutes
before the break.
The tireless Darren Wright, having missed
an earlier opportunity, atoned for his wastefulness
by racing on to Ryan Edwards’ pass
and picking out top-scorer McItnosh to stroke
in his sixth of the campaign.
Any hopes the West Walians had of getting
back into it were killed-off by the in-form
Danny Desormeaux, who brilliantly struck
twice in as many second-half minutes.
His first was a sumptuous half-volley into
the top corner after left-back Rees Darlington’s
cross, and his second was a superb header
from a centre from right-back Edwards.
The only sour note was County’s consolation,
scored by Nicky Woodrow, whose double dumped
Airbus out of the lucrative cup competition |

AIRBUS suffered a seventh straight defeat
in all competitions as rapidly improving Llangefni carried
out a smash-and-grab raid.
Fine finishes from Ywain Gwynedd and Darren Thomas earned the
new boys a fifth win on the run, but it might have been different
had the Wingmakers taken their chances.
Player-boss Gareth Owen saw a shot cleared off the line following
a neat one-two with Darren Wright before James McIntosh stabbed
over from just six yards out.
The visitors showed them how to do shortly it after the break
when Gwynedd and Thomas clinically converted.
But Airbus were back in it 17 minutes from time when a cross
from Ryan Edwards fell kindly to top-scorer McIntosh, who slammed
in his fifth goal of the season.
But their hopes of an equaliser were dashed 10 minutes later
as Llangefni caught them on the counter attack with Gwynedd
rifling in. |

A CONTENTIOUS penalty robbed
10-man and goalkeeper-less Airbus of what would
have been a magnificent point.
There was just six minutes to play when striker James McIntosh who had taken
over the keeping duties after Andy Hughes was stretchered off in the 65th minute
was harshly penalised for bringing down Lee Hunt in the box.
Hunt, lucky to still be on the field after a reckless challenge on McIntosh,
then watched on as Andy Moran cruelly slotted in the winner.
Moran had given Rhyl the lead in the seventh minute only for the Wingmakers to
equalise seven minutes before the break when top-scorer McIntosh lashed in a
15-yard volley to cap a great spell of pressure.
The visitors lost Steve Hopkins to a second yellow card three minutes after the
restart, but they coped without him and, incredibly, Hughes too, until the spot
kick that should never have been.
However, they would have grabbed a deserved share of the spoils had former Airbus
winger Craig Jones not cleared Darren Wright’s effort off the line.

AN incredible 55-yard strike
from Chris Williams ensured Nomads took the honours
in a tight Flintshire derby.
The goal-scoring defender’s wonder goal also
ended Airbus’ five-game unbeaten run.
Given their form, Gareth Owen’s men were
pre-match favourites but they didn’t
live up to their billing.
Nomads dominated the first half with Tommy Baker shooting just over from distance
while Craig Jones headed against the post after Stuart Cook’s inviting
cross.
No-one was prepared for the 33rd-minute opener, though, as Williams collected
the ball a few yards into his own half and, with the wind at his back, sent an
audacious chip over the back-pedalling Andy Hughes.
The goal sparked the Wingmakers into life with Alan Hooley and James McIntosh
firing wide.
Hooley went even closer with the first effort of the second half as he forced
Paul Pritchard into his only save.
Airbus finished the stronger and came desperately close to snatching a point
when player-boss Owen curled a vicious free kick on to the post |

A CRACKER from James McIntosh ensured the Wingmakers continued their flying start to the season on Friday night but the Citizens left the Airfield feeling they were robbed of a point.
There was seconds to spare when Bangor captain Marc Limbert’s in-swinging corner eluded goalkeeper Andy Hughes and appeared to cross the line.
But referee Rob Duncan and his assistant waived away their protests and so handing the points and the overnight leadership of the league to Airbus.
It was a thrilling end to a thrilling second half, in complete contrast to an opening period to forget.
The only chance of note came when Marc Smyth wastefully volleyed wide for the visitors while player-boss Gareth Owen saw his corner come back off the post for the hosts.
It was Owen’s men who upped the tempo after the break with the winner coming in the 48th minute when McIntosh reacted quickest to a knock down from a free kick and unleashed a fearsome half-volley that crashed in off the bar.
Bangor were rocking, and Paul Hallows and Dave Hughes came close to extending the advantage.
Nev Powell rang the changes and one of his substitutes, Tommy Mutton, would surely have equalised had it not been for a poor pass from Smyth.
Powell’s side finished the stronger and before the late moment of controversy, they also had a penalty appeal turned down. |

THE Wingmakers
had to settle for a point at the rain swept Airfield
despite the fact their opening day visitors played
the final third of the match without a recognised
goalkeeper.
Dave Jones was sent off with 23 minutes to play
after bringing down Airbus new boy Danny Desormeaux
in the box.
With no substitute keeper on the bench midfielder
Glyndwr Hughes had to take over the gloves.
And although he failed to stop Gareth Owen’s
penalty, he held firm after that.
Aber dominated the first half and took the lead
through Aneurin Thomas’ unstoppable 20-yard
free kick.
The Wingmakers came flying out of the traps after
the break but their hopes of getting back into
the game were hit when striker James McIntosh
was dismissed for a second booking five following
the restart.
But they were handed a lifeline when Jones upended
Desormeaux after the midfielder broke the offside
trap.
Player-boss Owen’s successful spot-kick
spurred his side on and they came close to winning
it when the excellent Alan Hooley saw his clever
chip drift just over. |

At a breezy Airfield the
West Cheshire League champions were comprehensively
swamped by an Airbus side with a lively forward
line and a defence superbly marshalled throughout
by John Davies & a new-look, less-portly
Mark Allen, backed by goalkeeper Andy Hughes,
looking bigger than ever. The scoring was nearly
opened when Paul Hallows raced through and chipped
the 'keeper as he ran out but the ball was hooked
off the line. Alan Hooley was then clean through
but screwed the ball wide of the right post.
A good one-handed save came from Andy Hughes
and shortly after on 16' James McIntosh snapped
it in after a goalmouth scramble and another
goal-line clearance (1-0). Just after that Macca
seized on a terrible clearance only for the 'keeper
to quickly react to deflect the ball over the
bar with his boot as he shot. On 28' Paul Hallows
added a superb second, running on to a through
ball, riding the tackle, drawing the 'keeper & firing
in (2-0). Andy Hughes was then back in action
with another fine flying, left-handed save to
deflect a fierce drive. Three minutes into the
second half Alan Hooley fired in number three
(3-0). Two minutes later Hooley gave Darren Wright
a chance to fly in himself at the far post but
he couldn't steer it home then two minutes after
that a happy Paul Hallows, looking an exciting
acquisition, scored a Stuart Rimmer-esque goal,
taking the ball from the halfway line to draw
the 'keeper & complete his hat-trick (4-0).
On 61' the scoring ended with a clever back-flick
from ex-Chester City Darren Wright (5-0), although
Alan Hooley could have grabbed his second with
six minutes to go but for a good save. The 'Bus
continue unbeaten in pre-season. |

| At a cold, scenic Argoed Sports Ground,
with horses grazing behind the stand and where the temperatures
are Alpine at the best of times, Airbus hit the back of the
pretty yellow nets four times past their brave and aggressive
neighbours fielding three former Airmen in Ben McKean, John
Farrelly and Anthony Williams. No favours were given from a
team who have in the past helped The Wingmakers back to fitness
from injury or absence and another good work out resulted for
the increasingly competent-looking Blues, who kept their cool
throughout. Paul Hallows opened the scoring with a free header
from a Gareth Owen corner into the roof of the net on 9' (0-1).
After 16' Alan Hooley was put through but tamely shot at the
'keeper. In a scrappy first half after that Isa were restricted
to long range efforts past a deep & compact Airbus defence.
A minute into the second period Hallows hit the post with a
cross shot, the ball pinged out to Dave Hughes & he fired
home for no 2 (0-2). With a quarter of an hour gone there was
a niggly bout of push & shove with honours even, then
a blatant Isa handball from a Hughes cross (balanced by a late
one at the other end), amazingly missed by the otherwise efficient
referee. On 67' Hughes could have had his second, being left
in an acre of space from a long ball over the top but took
far too long & allowed the save, then the towering Danny
Desormeaux headed over the bar. On 70' Chesney did get his
second, with a rare header right on the back post from a fine
Paul Hallows right wing cross (0-3). On 72' the ginger-haired
accountant got his third after a well-worked move that had
the Isa defence all over the place (0-4). cross. |
